The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória (better known as the Monastery of Batalha) is a monastery located in the village of Batalha, in the Centro region, province of Beira Litoral, in Portugal, which was built in 1386 by King John I of Portugal[2] as a thank you to the Virgin Mary for the victory against the Castilian rivals in the battle of Aljubarrota. This monastery of the Order of Saint Dominic was built over two centuries until about 1563, during the reign of seven kings of Portugal, although since 1388 the first Dominican friars had already lived there. An example of Portuguese late Gothic architecture, or Manueline style, it is considered a world heritage site by UNESCO, and on July 7, 2007 it was elected as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. In Portugal, IPPAR still classifies it as a National Monument, since 1910. Since 2016, it has had the status of National Pantheon.

Nazaré is a Portuguese village in the district of Leiria, the seat of the homonymous municipality with about 10,300 inhabitants. Located in the province of Extremadura, part of the Intermunicipal Community of the West, in the region of Centro.

The village is the seat of a small municipality with an area of 82.43 km² and 15,158 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 3 parishes. [4] The municipality is surrounded to the north, east and south by the municipality of Alcobaça and to the west it borders the Atlantic Ocean.

The current urban space of the town brings together three old villages, Pederneira, Sítio da Nazaré and Praia da Nazaré and new neighbourhoods from the second half of the twentieth century, such as Urbisol or Rio Novo, which arose as a result of the natural expansion of the three primitive nuclei. The Lighthouse, located in the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1978.
