Stopping Place: Convent of Christ, Church of the Templar Castle, Tomar 2300-000 Portugal
We start the tour by heading north to Tomar, through the farmland of Ribatejo. In Tomar, we visit the Convent of Christ, originally built by the Knights Templar, and explore its Templar castle, the Romanesque round, the Manueline church, the Renaissance convent and the monastic enclosures (ticket included). We will learn how the Knights Templar originated the Order of Christ and how this new order became fundamental in the Portuguese Age of Discovery. This convent was partially forgotten until it became today’s UNESCO world heritage site.

Stopping Place: Nabao River, Tomar 2300-000 Portugal
We continue to have lunch in the beautiful city of Tomar, with the beautiful Nabão River running through the city. After hearing about the Jewish heritage in the city and exploring its narrow streets full of history, we stop for free time for lunch, where you can enjoy a meal of traditional Portuguese food in one of its many restaurants (meal not included in the price).

Stopping Place: Palácio Nacional de Mafra, Terreiro D. João v, Mafra 2640-492 Portuga
After lunch, we’ll get back in the car and head back to the city of Mafra. There, we will marvel at the scale of the sumptuous National Palace of Mafra, with its 220-meter façade, 1200 rooms, and 4700 doors and windows. We will have free time to explore the many rooms without missing the infirmary and the large library with its colony of bats, which protect the books from harmful insects. Learn how the palace played an important role in the end of the Portuguese monarchy. If there’s time, enjoy a traditional sweet treat in a typical pastry shop (not included) before returning to Lisbon.
